How much does it cost to replace guttering?

MyJobQuote's gutter replacement cost guide, updated 25 August 2026, puts the average gutter replacement in the UK at around £1,000 to £1,600, and uPVC supplied and fitted at £40 to £50 per metre. A three bedroom semi with 32 metres of gutter comes out at £1,300 to £1,600 on the same guide. That range is theirs, not ours. We give a free estimate, because your number depends on the length of the run and how it is reached.

How much does it cost to replace guttering in the UK?

MyJobQuote's gutter replacement cost guide, updated 25 August 2026, breaks its average down by house, and it counts metres of gutter rather than bedrooms.

Two bed terrace, 26 metres, £1,050 to £1,300

Bungalow, 28 metres, £1,100 to £1,400

Three bed semi, 32 metres, £1,300 to £1,600

Four bed detached, 46 metres, £1,850 to £2,300

Those are their figures, not ours, and they are a national average rather than a quote. We give a free estimate, because your number depends on the length of the run and how it is reached.

What guttering costs per metre, by material

The same guide publishes a supply and fit rate per metre for each material.

Plastic uPVC, £40 to £50 per metre

Steel, £40 to £60 per metre

Cast iron, £50 to £75 per metre

Zinc, £50 to £72 per metre

Aluminium, £55 to £78 per metre

Copper, £65 to £95 per metre

Downpipes are priced separately on it. uPVC downpipe is £35 to £45 per metre and cast iron downpipe is £120 to £190 per metre. Taking the old guttering off and away is put at £150 to £250.

Measure your own run before you ring anyone. Count the metres of gutter along each elevation, add them up and multiply by the rate above. That gives you a sensible expectation, which is the whole point of a cost guide.

What makes gutter replacement cost more?

Height. A bungalow run is reached off a ladder. The same length across the back of a three storey house needs a tower or a scaffold before anyone touches the gutter.

Access. A back run with no side gate, a conservatory or an extension roof under the gutter, a slope, or a road with nowhere to stand a tower. All of it adds time before a length of gutter is touched.

The board behind it. Every bracket is screwed into the fascia, so a soft fascia gives the new gutter nothing to hold on to. That turns a gutter job into a roofline job, and it is one reason a quote comes back above a cost guide.

Shape of the run. Corners, outlets, stop ends, hoppers and a downpipe that has to be moved all take longer per metre than a straight open elevation.

Be careful with the hourly rate. MyJobQuote's guide puts a guttering specialist at £55 to £65 an hour, an assistant at £40 an hour, and a typical job at 5 to 6 hours. Its roof repair cost guide, updated 27 August 2026, puts a roofer at £30 to £45 an hour. Those are two different trades on two different guides, so neither rate is the rate for your job. It shows that an hourly rate is a weak way to price roofline work. Ask for the job priced, not the hour.

Is it cheaper to clean guttering than replace it?

Everything above is replacement, meaning the old guttering comes off the house and new guttering goes on. A clean is a different job. It gets the moss, silt, leaves and roof grit out of a gutter that is otherwise sound, and the brackets, the joints and the fall all stay as they are, so none of the figures above apply to it.

Our own gutter cleaning starts from £30, and it is the only price we publish anywhere. If a gutter is overflowing, get it cleaned before anyone talks to you about replacing it, because a full gutter and a failed gutter look identical from the ground.

When you do not need a new gutter at all

One dripping joint is a joint. The seal in a uPVC union perishes long before the gutter does, and swapping a union is a small job. The same guide puts small repairs at £180 to £250.

A run that has dropped in the middle is usually brackets or the board behind them, not the gutter. That roof repair guide puts a fascia or soffit repair at £250 to £750.

Replacing the lot is the honest answer when the fascia is rotten, when the profile is obsolete so no fittings match it any more, when the run has been patched at joint after joint already, or when the boards are coming off anyway for other work.

When the answer is replacement, new UPVC guttering and downpipes, and the fascia behind them if it has gone, is work we do. Our page on it is linked further down, under The work this is about.

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace guttering on a three bedroom semi?
MyJobQuote's gutter replacement cost guide, updated 25 August 2026, prices a three bed semi at 32 metres of gutter and puts it at £1,300 to £1,600 in uPVC. That is a national figure from their guide and not our price. Height, access and the state of the fascia behind the gutter can all move it.
Is guttering priced by the metre or by the house?
By the metre. MyJobQuote gives uPVC at £40 to £50 per metre supplied and fitted, updated 25 August 2026, and works its house type figures out from the length of the run. Count your own metres and you can check any quote you are given.
